  • Blindness

My mother teaches in a school where there are few blind students also. She talks about them passionately and praises their intelligence beyond the other students. By chance I have not been closely associated with the blind people, however I have filled my eye donation form when I was 18 years. Yes, I would want any and every body part to be utilized after my death, the value of each organ will increase if it remains and be useful to someone after me. This “AFTER ME” puts me on another tangent of thoughts – we are not the body – but here I am not writing on those thoughts anyways.

So coming to the topic – Blindness. How do you define blindness? Inability to see, is that the only definition? According to me, the definition of blindness goes beyond just the inability to see. Or if I think more, in some sense of the word “see” may includes many things which we generally overlook.

[Tweet “‘Our’ perceptions create ‘our reality’ – than whatever is the truth.”]

‘See’ should not be only associated with eyes. After your eyes see, what happens next? The mind creates a picture and mind infers the picture. The inference also has a sense of blindness too. Inability to infer, inability to understand and misconception of actions; these are few other things that need to be included in defining “blindness”. “Our” perceptions create “our” reality – than whatever is the truth.

quote-Helen-Keller-the-highest-result-of-education-is-tolerance-103858An example that came to my mind is related to a recent incident in the US. A young man unleashed gunfire in Tennessee military facilities. Initial reports were stating that it could be an act of terror. This man had stayed somewhere in Middle East for more than 1/2 year in 2014. His high school friends of this man say he was a good guy and it was shocking and unbelievable that he did it (paraphrase a CNN news report heard earlier). So point is what happened that this young man did what he did?

If I cannot see Blue color, I am color blind for that color, if I cannot see peace and only fed with what wrong is happening with “my community” by “other commutes” I am blinded by what good the other community is doing. Many a times, the bad is more of perception than a reality. This is how people are blinded to see only what they are told to see.

This Tennessee shooter was blinded in the same manner. That is also a kind of blindness too. The intolerance we see in many people is because they can only see what is right for them and they are blind for opinion of the other. Perhaps the young man got brainwashed by some education which was rather reverse of Education – “The highest result of education is tolerance” Helen Keller. [assuming it was a terror attack, as it was speculated initially]

[Tweet “”The highest result of education is tolerance” Helen Keller.”]

In a similar manner, I am blinded to see only peace, growth, happiness. On a lighter note – I see many vehicles with their number plate as 23XY, reason is – my vehicle is numbered 2315, its not that these vehicles were not visible earlier, now I notice them intentionally and ignore vehicle with some other numbers.

  • Right And Wrong

Recently, one of my friends Piyush ‘Jayant’ Arora published his poetry’s book. The title of the book is Rang Leela.

When I received his email stating from these places I can buy the book –

I told him that I rarely read poetry out of my educational requirements. The title seems interesting I would like to read it. I got a copy this week. So, I started reading it from cover.

This was the first time I was reading a poet whom I can imagine as an individual. When I read Dharamvir Bharati (Andha yug) or Ramdhari Singh Dinkar (Kurukshetra), I always felt poets are super humans from a different world. Piyush is like me – he has done his engineering and an MBA. So I can think of a a human [not a super human writing].

The first thing I read in his book was back page cover.

    [Hindi] ना खुशियों की बहार … आ गामो का दरिया है…
    ज़िंदगी और कुछ नही… बस अपना अपना नज़रिया है…

[Translation] Life is all about our perspective and we all see it with our own lens. Our experiences and interactions fill in the color of the canvas of our lives.

When I was reading the good small poems I wrote to him about referring to some in my blogs. He readily agreed.

This week’s LBC (Loose Bloggers Consortium) title perfectly matches with Piyush’s perspective.

There is nothing right and nothing wrong. These are all our perspectives. Piyush’s poetry’s are also on the same. Another Poem I am referring here from his same book –

[English – my words] If truth has always been triumphant over false… and everything is completely black and white… had there been a flow of different perspectives?

Everything is our mind game, a perspective. There is nothing right and wrong. Everything is just “IS”

  • You Can’t Do That!

When I read this title – “you can’t do that!” – for the LBC (Loose Bloggers Consortium) I asked myself “what is ‘that’?”

The title gave me a sort of shock, why would someone ask the other to not do something? It is a different case that when we tell a child not to do something, well we say this with some reason. Or let us grow the logic of not letting someone do something – someone who is not aware of the environment can be “advised” not to do something. This logic can be explained in the business as – a new joinee told about keeping away from the wipers / foxes of the office. How they should manage the office and department politics.

    Guruji

I have heard a story. A master told his one of the disciple – “Do not eat outside food.” He meant that you are doing meditation practice, you should restrict yourself to the Satvik food of the Ashram. Specially for this disciple the reason was that he was progressing well. As the fate had been – Adam ate the apple! This disciple was tempted to eat some Moong bhajia [an Indian delicacy]. He ate it. Next day the disciple could not meditate properly. The master realized it but kept quiet. In the evening disciple confessed – Master I am not able to meditate properly. Master asked – did you eat something outside? Disciple confessed yes ate moong bhajia. After a brief silence the Master said – “The person who was making that bhajia was not paid for last few weeks, and he was cursing his fate and the owner of the shop. The person was worried for his family and daily expenses.”

When I was a kid my father used to tell us that the food is also affected by the feelings of the maker. I remember Indian philosophy saying “what you eat you become”. [Tweet “It’s True: You Are What You Eat www.inc.com/magazine/201307/adam-bluestein/the-best-foods-for-leaders-to-eathtml.html”] Read Inc article It’s True: You Are What You Eat.

Me being me – I ask occasionally, the Buddha used to beg. How about that? But as instructed – You Can’t Do That!

  • Styles of Tribute

I was having some orange juice in a restaurant with a friend of mine. Suddenly his phone rang; he could not avoid that call. It was his wife on the other side. How can you ignore call from your boss? He picked up the phone and the voice on the other side was somewhat panicky. There is breaking news on Television that there was an earthquake in Nepal, I tried calling but the lines at our native place are jammed / busy.

My friend reassured his wife. Don’t worry, I shall call, you cannot do anything sitting here and worrying. Whatever happened will happen. His reassurance was firm, I was surprised. The tremors were felt in Delhi and Kolkata as well. We finished our discussion, he went to his next engagement and I towards home. I called my sister, brother and my in-laws. Thankfully everyone was safe. However, this event touched me; two kinds of thoughts were running through my mind.

    Nepal Earthquake Tweet 1

    1. My friends response and
    2. Feeling the insignificance of human being.

His response perfectly fits in the Reaction and response story. My friend must have felt for his family (in the UP border of Nepal), however he was completely measure. Perhaps he knew nothing is going to happen to his family or he has accepted that the earthquake has done its job. Now I have to decide how should I work on its aftermath?

The feeling of insignificance is nothing new to me. I have written about the same earlier in my blogs Ego, Size of the Universe! and Ek Omkar Satnam. This time the feeling included another aspect, the terrorists and their stupidity.

When the earth/universe wants to teach us our significance or if it wants to cut us to size only one natural calamity is enough. If that is not enough, there are stupid people killing each other in the name of their “mind game” called religion. Though at a later stage I heard, read and saw some pictures of tweets where religious preachers were preaching their religion rather. Surprised, yet when religion becomes bigger than humanity these sighting should not be startling.

May the souls rest in peace. Wish Tributes are not met with nonsensical statements as few shown in the images here.

A homage should be paid to the minds of those who write such comments at a time of grief of others.

PS – There should be lessons on compassion for such people.

  • Gratitude

This blog is dedicated to my adopted uncle – Mr Ramana Rajgopaul. Actually, he is kind enough to adopt me as RR-at-weddinghis nephew. Uncleji writes daily on his blog website – www.rummuser.com

I got connected with uncleji in 2011, when inadvertently I reached his blog site, read blogs and read “about me” section. We started communication through mails and later over phone. I met him the same year and of course have been seeing him often. He has been a go to person for anything in my life starting 2011. I have requested for his guidance in personal, professional and virtual life (Facebook/twitter/blog). I think I had deleted a Facebook comment when he suggested negatively on the same.

Our communication started with his about me sentence – “I stopped doing a long time ago.” and I asked him – this sounds like Ashtavakra Geeta and kind of meditation et al. So, we started talking about spirituality and in his humors he added every aspect of life – from sex to super-consciousness. He can turn any serious topic (life & death) to a joke and vice versa. I had been awestruck when he answered one of my questions with a Sanskrit Verse from some Veda! He did that occasionally. What surprises me is this – Remembering meanings of somethings, remembering context of few things and remembering many verse of Vedas and referring to it at right occasions (that too in the language) is unique. [actually he has good command on a lot of languages – starting English, Tamil to Sanskrit.]

The most interesting thing about him is “everything”! He is playful, he is serious, he is well read and most interestingly he enjoys his life to the fullest. I am changed from 2011 to now. My friends and colleagues know me as “no nonsense guy”, however starting 2011 when I started meeting girls for my (arrange) marriage couple of girls told me that I have “good sense of humor” and I am “interesting”! I was shocked when I heard this for the first time. Later on when I heard this from a couple of other girls I said ok! there are two possibilities

    1. either that is a joke or
    2. I have, at last, learnt the trick 😉

Generally, 2nd had been the case and credit goes to uncleji. In relation with marriage, most of my Lingayat bashing was shared with him, before it came on blogs. He was (and has been always) a great support during that time too. I bothered him a lot on (apparently) “my community”, where I don’t belong anyways.

Once I wrote to him this – earlier I didnt understand you because you were humorous and witty (used to take lot of time to understand the jokes) now you are talking more profound that I can understand. Though, I follow the “art of living” and Guruji says God loves fun, I am learning it with uncleji.

  • Why not Celebrate daily? Happy New Year

In India we celebrate maximum number of New Years – Hindu New Year, Christian New Year, Parasi New Year etc etc. Besides all these new year celebrations we have many more festivals. I believe is we go by every tradition and religion followed here, every second day would be a reason to celebrate. And why not? We should enjoy and celebrate life, why wait?

When I reflect and visualize ancient India, I can only visualize happy songs and some festivities of this movie – Utsav. Not the whole movie but the rustic milieu and everyone knowing the other and festivity. I remember as a kid we used to have almost a one month holiday during Diwali. We used to celebrate a lot of festivals, one was Vasant Utsav during Feb March followed by Holi. Holi too used to be an interesting festival and we used to say – “Do not mind its Holi today” (बुरा न मानो  होली है).

holiI relate most celebrations to Holi (though now a days holi is celebrate with wilderness, which I do not like). Our every celebration should be like Holi celebration. Wish we can learn from that one sentence – do not take life seriously, Enjoy life. Now we search for reasons to be happy and enjoy life. Thought this “search” can be accommodated however “joy” should be with awareness. I think we are missing that link of awareness now a days.

I heard Sri Sri’s (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar) old talk QnA session. In that session he emphasized on celebrating every moment. It is a good idea.

Celebrate daily, celebrate every moment – with full awareness.

  • Religion is poison

Long time back I watched a movie Seven years in Tibet (book link Author – Heinrich Harrer). It was based on true story. In that movie after meeting the Dalai Lama Chinese representative makes a comment – “Religion is a poison” (Watch the video below).

While watching the movie, I was shocked to hear this statement and was offended. Well, that time I did not start writing this blog, though I had reverence for the Buddha and the teachings of the Buddha. However, I knew this lessons even as a kid, when I had seen many religious violence, riots and subsequent curfews in my town (Dhar Madhya Pradesh). This lessons proves to be true historically and when we see what is happening in present day world. I intend to point at the Israel and Palestine conflict. I know when people will read this many will have their opinions. Here are two 5 min videos to give you different perspectives.

Decision is yours to take sides. But I’ve realized – religion is poison. Religion is poison the way it’s preached & practiced now a days. One of my friends, Dhaval Thakar, suggested me to read a Huffington Post article before making my mind and opinion on the conflict – 7 Things to Consider Before Choosing Sides in the Middle East Conflict. A very relevant question is there in the post – why are we not questioning deaths happening in the attacks of ISIS and the killings during dictatorships of many rulers including – Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi et al. In fact there are conflicts all across the world – until we finish the weapons we have already made how can new weapons be sold? [Tweet “Until we finish the weapons we have already made how can new weapons be sold?”]

The fanaticism we follow in the name of religion is really a poison. Now watch this movie directed by Vijay Raaz – “Kya dilli Kya Lahore” worth asking few questions.

PS – at least I never heard the Buddha teaching killing, his one biggest lesson was compassion, besides meditation.

  • Empowerment means slavery

I am a heavy user of internet and mobile. There have been times when almost always I am on internet. In my office about 8-9 hours I am on my laptop. When I am traveling I am on internet through my mobile or fiddling with my mobile many a times completely unnecessarily. When I am at home, my Wi-Fi is on both laptop & mobile are connected to internet. Effectively, I was not using my electronics gadgets “only” when I am asleep!

Responsive_Web_DesignMy friends kept on saying, I never believed that I use my mobile overly many times without any reason! My friend Nilesh Yeram sent me a link – install “Break Free” in your mobile. The app has shown me the mirror – “you have unlocked my mobile about 70 times”, of course I did not receive so many calls or SMSes. Eye opening notifications were “you are on twitter for 30 min!” “Get off call/whatsapp” This made me question myself – “Is Technology empowering us or enslaving us?”

The word slavery looked too daunting to me. I felt how can I be a slave- my ego was speaking. So I checked Dictionary; Slavery according to Dictionary.com is “the condition of being subject to some influence or habit”. I am indeed a slave of mobile. I know I am empowered a lot by internet, but slowly I became a slave of these devices. This reminds me of The book of Mirdad – we live the statement Slave is master of the master.

This I received on “WhatsApp” today!

  • Reservations! No, it’s about Inequality

One of my friends commented on Facebook as priority #1 for New Govt of India – Abolish Reservation! Here are my 2 cents on reservation (e.g. reservation in Govt jobs, education et al) and how it should change.

Indian reservations system is grossly misused, people assume it to be “entitlement”. An entitlement for even those whose parents have become somebody e.g. IAS from nobody.

Reservation system was brought in to reduce inequality. This inequality at olden days was among caste based divided Indian citizen. In last so many years division is somewhat reduced however now the divide is evident among those oppressed communities as well for whom primarily the system was created.  The system needs to be rationalized. Just to give you an example – Devyani Khobragade is from reserved category. She became an IFS with the same reservation system – why was she given reservation when her father was also an IAS officer? The purpose of reservation was to uplift lives of the oppressed, now few of the oppressed have become oppressors as well! Any class 1 officers son or daughter shouldn’t be considered for reservation.

Two different stories where I dont deny reservation –

Budia Damor was my classmate in 11th – of course he was from reserved category – he did not have books. He was from a village named “Gram Aali” on Mandav road near Dhar. A village with population of about 300 (in 1995), yes in India there are villages as small as that. He was committed and he needed help. Besides Govt scholarship and reservation – I thought what best I could do was to give him some of my books, I did it. There are many such people. They need helping hand.
I also remember Shaku Bai – our maid. Very committed, hardworking and responsible person. She had 5 kids, 2 or 3 of her kids were studying in a govt school in some tribal area, living in Govt hostel. The biggest asset for her in that hostel was – at least the kids are not starving! Yes this is the situation in many parts of India.

building bridgesShe lived in a hut (what you just can imagine in photos, drawing only). She was expecting her 6th child- my mother helped her a lot. After delivery 2nd day she was at home to do work, baby with her with only few cloths my mom gave her. My Mom, didnt allow her to do anything, gave cloths for the baby and gave her gyan on family planning et al. I must say she was very committed, hardworking and responsible, may be I don’t have more words for her appreciation. We need to help them. Not Devyani Khobragade for becoming an IFS on the entitlement of Shaku Bai or Budia Damor.

I see reservation for bridging gap of inequality – so if a Brahmin boy is very poor a chance for his upliftment should also be considered. Keywords are – upliftment and bridging the gap of inequality – Not scoring political brownie point.

Though when I’m writing Brahmin I personally have serious objections with Indian caste system.

  • Why not define smaller things?

Last month I met Prof Mankad. I always think whenever I meet him I should record our conversation. He is indeed a library of knowledge in himself. We discussed about our education system besides many other things (blogs written last weeks) Purpose of education and Showjumping. Dr Mankad told me – “one of the real problems with our daily life is our weird definitions e.g. success. We define success as owning that BMW. Until we get that BMW we don’t feel content. Thus, we avoid being satisfied, we do not live a fulfilling life. Though as an individual we can, but the weird definition makes us estranged from many small things.”

    Vada Pav
    Vada Pav

He further shared an experience. One of his friends landed in India from the US (at about 12:00 AM or 2:00 AM). Next day 6:00 AM he was at Prof Mankad’s home, and asked to just accompany him. They drew to Karjat had some special Vadapav of that place and drove back to Mumbai.

Well, all this made me question few very basic things we generally overlook. We do not think much about basics of life, but still have some preconceived notion about those things. As Dr Mankad shared example of success, another example is beauty. I watched this video in my MBA Marketing class. Our definition of beauty is weird watch this <2 min ad of Dove, to understand how our perceptions are defined; at times created. Many girls want to be fair, those who have curly hair want straight and vice versa!

How often have we thought on these seemingly simple, stupid, strange yet serious questions. What is the meaning of Success (for me or you)? Does our definition of success change over time? what is the purpose of life? Why are we studying (at least when in college)? How will I/you know when I/you reach the target (a 100,000 INR or 10,00,00,000 INR), the goal is always a moving one! What is the benchmark? I think we need to just pause at times, and think how we want to shape our life, what is important for ourselves at least that instance, isn’t it? I think that is what enlightened masters call “living in present”
