  • Saint in Suit

It was Feb or March of 2011. We were just completing our MBA and as would be the case with any other B-school companies were visiting campus for recruitment. A big company was scheduled to visit one day. One of my friends – Jaydutt – was among the most likely candidates to be selected. However, he did not even attend the presentation of the company. Everyone was curious, why?

I – besides others – was shocked it! I went to his room and asked him, why did not you attend the presentation itself forget the recruitment process?

He said – “I know the company well, and I have firsthand experienced working there. Pravin, as confident you were, other friends too were confident and I was under pressure to make a decision, it was a enormous confusion I was also not able to make a choice. So, yesterday night when I was about to go to bed, I asked myself this question – ‘if I join them, would I be happy getting up every day in the morning and going to office? Would I enjoy working there? I would invest at least 8 hours per day there, which is 33% of my daily life or close to 50% of my hours awake in a day, am I really keen to go there?’ My conscience told me NO! I decided to skip the company.”

MeditationThis small conversation with Jaydutt made me think – those points were such that even after full 5 years I still remember the discussion. I recalled that small discussion with Jaydutt when I planned another of my journey from Business to the Buddha to Saint in Suit. I realized whenever I say Business to the Buddha, there seems to be a gap between Business and the Buddha. There seems to be a movement from one place to the other. It requires separate effort or action.

When I met Fateh uncle recently, I realized that it is not going from one place to the other. It is “being” that. He is a successful businessman and a spiritual person. The title Saint in Suit actually came in my mind when we met once and he was wearing a suit! Now or in future we’ll have to be professionals with the spiritual connect. We need to be saints in the form of professionals. That awareness will either sprout or if does not, we need it to be developed. Though, unfortunately currently I don’t have time to commit to this and keep writing regularly there besides keeping my pace here too.

Saint in Suit concept is spirituality and business are together. In this concept the plan is to write about how business works (or should work) on spiritual practices, how it can work on spiritual practices, sharing any model related spirituality and business, sharing or defining model related to spirituality and business in any business function e.g. Board level to line executive from marketing to HR to suppliers etc.

I’m hoping to bring like minded people on this platform to start writing about being saint in suits. your contributions are welcome there create your login.

  • I’d Rather Be

The topic is esoteric for me. If I can just “BE” I would just want to “be”. Unfortunately until my mind runs round I would keep on BEcoming rather than just being someone/somebody.

I am a wanderer, not physically as much but yes the mind does not stay at one place. You can check – I have found relationship between spirituality and business. I have written how technical methodology (TRIZ) can be associated with business. These are signs of just-be-597091_640my hyper active (rather wanderlust) mind. Can I just “be” – if yes I would just “BE”.

A final thought – how about BEing the Buddha? The Buddha of this age?

This topic was suggested by Shackman, for the weekly Friday Loose Bloggers Consortium where currently nine of us write on the same topic every Friday.  I hope that you enjoyed my contribution to that effort.  The eight other bloggers who write regularly are, in alphabetical order AshokgaelikaaLin, Maxi, Padmum, Rummuser,  Shackman and The Old Fossil. • Left and right

What I could infer from “Left and right” (as the topic was) or say left, right and center is “all over the places, not organized”.

If someone is in complete disarry e.g. left and right, what that person needs is meditation. Watch this video on Meditation by Osho. What this video suggests – I would say in one word – is “Awareness”.

If one’s mind is also going left and right, one must be aware of the disarray, confusion. “I am aware that I am confused.” Sounds funny. However, I think with the deep clarity and awareness of the confusion and acceptance of that confusion one may get some solution.

  • Bhakti

The Buddha only spoke about scientific path of liberation – Meditation. According to Indian philosophy there are more ways, one is Bhakti or devotion. Remember Meera bai, Meera bai followed Bhakti path?in_union_with_krishna_oq05

I was speaking with someone. I said I recite Hanuman Chalisa but find it very strange. Hanuman Chalisa is a prayer/song/devotional hymn for Lord Hanuman (Foreigners know Hanuman as Monkey god of Ramayana’s time).

According to Hanuman Chalisa, Hanumanji suggested Vibhishan (brother of King Ravana) to go to lord Ram, thus Vibhishan became king of Lanka after Rama defeated Ravana.

    तुम्हरो मन्त्र बिभीषन माना।
    लंकेश्वर भए सब जग जाना॥

I never liked this part of the Hanuman Chalisa (statement). What I know is – Vibhishan suggested Ravana that Ravana has done wrong and Ravana should make amend. Ravana does not listen to Vibhishan and ostracize him. Vibhishan knew what is right and wrong. He made his choice to be on the side of Rama in the war. I dislike Tulsidas (author of Hanuman Chalisa) giving credit to lord Hanuman for Vibhishan’s choice and decision. I would not question on Sugriva‘s anointment though.

At times, I have reservations with these prayers where we keep on praising the lord with a result in mind. “Please give me this thing or that thing.” Effectively we are making a business deal with them an example is Ganesha’s aarti – http://greenmesg.org/mantras_slokas/sri_ganesha-jai_ganesh_jai_ganesh_aarti.php which seems more of a business than a loving relationship.

My this hesitation was broken by one Art of Living Bhajans. I had seen (almost met) Guruji – Sri Sri Ravishankar – in 2003. But I did not do the course for 1.5 years because I felt “My Guru will have time for me, he (Sri Sri) has a lot of followers.” My sister forced me into the course. Besides the interesting method – Sudarshan Kriya – I learnt in the course, what I loved was this bhajan, link below. It has “no demand”, it has “no praise” either. It just repeats one name of lord Krishna.

This is real Bhakti in my definition. I love this bhajan – no request, no appeal, no begging and no demand. This is Bhakti – whatever you want to confer, confer; it is your wish/will. I am reciting your name no matter what, no matter in what situation you keep me. That is the other path for liberation according to Indian spirituality.

  • Matter of choice

prayer of frogIt’s no good having our prayers answered If they are not answered at the right time:

In ancient India much store was set by the Vedic rites which were said to be so scientific in their application that when the sages prayed for rain there was never any drought. It is thus that a man set himself to pray, according to these rites, to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, begging her to make him rich.

He prayed to no effect for ten long years, after which period of time, he suddenly saw the illusory nature of wealth and adopted the life of a renunciate in the Himalayas.

He was sitting in meditation one day when he opened his eyes and saw before him an extraordinarily beautiful woman, all bright and shining as if she were made of gold.

“Who are you and what are you doing here?” he asked.

“I am the goddess Lakshmi to whom you recited hymns for twelve years,” said the woman. “I have appeared to grant you your desire.”

“Ah, my dear goddess,” exclaimed the man, “I have since attained the bliss of meditation and lost my desire for wealth. You come too late. Tell me, why did you delay so long in coming?”

“To tell you the truth,” said the goddess, “Given the nature of those rites you so faithfully performed you had fully earned the wealth. But, in my love for you and my desire for your welfare, I held it back.”

If you had the choice, which would you choose: the granting of your petition or the grace to be peaceful whether it is granted or not?

  • Kashmiri Saint – Lalla

I was listening to Osho’s discourse and in one discourse he was referring to a Kashmiri woman Saint – Lalleshwari. I was impressed with the first verse I read from her. Thought to share it here for many others to read –

Whatever work I did became worship of the Lord;Lalla
    Whatever word I uttered became a prayer;
Whatever this body of mine experienced became
    the sadhana of Saiva Tantra
illumining my path to Parmasiva. -138

So wonderful, profound meaningful and to the point. I plan to read more of her writings.

  • Eating for the sake of eating?

I was reading blog of Thich Nhat Hanh – a Vietnamese Buddhist Monk. It is an irony that I’m an Indian, however this Vietnamese monk introduced me to the Buddha in true sense. I read his book Old Path White Clouds and I came to know the Buddha I know now.

In his blog – The Value of Being Together when I read the point of Happiness, I remembered an incident of my life, sharing here.

Once, I went to a restaurant – Annapoorna Bhojanalya – in Indore with one of my friends Vijay Sharma. It is a rajasthani/Gujrati thali style joint at Jail road in Indore. Its quality of food is very good.

We sat and ordered our thali. I was eating very slowly, not noticing anything. I was enjoying the food. I was completely into the process of eating. Well, may be that is called meditation. After some time (usually time in which a sane person should complete eating his meal) almost every second person was looking at me. I was still eating, slowly and in all likelihood mindfully. On a lighter note, I did not over eat! 🙂

I remember, while going out after the dinner Vijay told me “…what was happening?” I didn’t understand the question. He said everyone was looking at you the way you were eating. I had no idea what that meant. Well, he completed the sentence by saying – “…that was not in any derogatory terms. Something was different than usual while you were there.” This was what was happening there “…we eat as slow as we can so we can enjoy our freedom. . We can listen to the taste in our mouth.” (from Thay’s blog)

Do we eating for the sake of it or we’d do this also completely, in meditation?

Disclaimer– Author is neither Buddhist, nor a seasoned practitioner, just an explorer of the path; not authority on meditation either.

  • Some other day

I was traveling from Mumbai to Pune for some meetings, in my oblivion talking to my senior and looking at road. Suddenly I looked out of window – wow! I am crossing through a beautiful place. This is wonderful, the waterfall, its open you can look long distance.”

That gaze was like just sit here for meditation; for those who enjoy involving themselves in some activities they can climb the mountain, trek or kick around their football or cycle in some planes. Those who want to party can take their cans of beverages and drink, eat and be happy.

I have noticed this occasionally that we just overlook things around us. We are just rushing. Back in the car, I was really rushing to the client meeting, we started talking back about the problem, possible solution frameworks and all.

At the back of my mind – the thought cropped up – some other day. We do not have time in our chore just to sit and reflect, or sit and do nothing or sit and just be thankful for what awesome things we have around – for example appreciate this place, sound of the waterfall, chirping of the birds etc. We pass our life thinking – some other day. That day rarely comes…

Some other day – may be today?

  • The circle, conflicts and avoiding conflicts

Perform an experiment – a simple 2-minute experiment. Take a blank sheet of paper and a pen. At the center of the page, put a dot. What is it? A dot nothing else right? Now draw a big circle with the dot as the center of the circle. Now what is the dot? It is center of the circle, right? Everything on the page is around it “now”.

The dot was nothing when there was no circular periphery. The dot was meaningless in itself. The periphery gave it a very powerful definition. It became the center of the existence e.g. the periphery. Now for a moment if you remove the dot (the center of the periphery), the periphery losses its definition. The periphery would not remain a circle without the dot “center”. This is interdependent co-arising in one sense for the center and the circle.

Visualize the page you took is the universe and the dot represents you. We think that “I am” the center of the universe. This is the case with many of us – if not all. We are self centered. Everything is around me and everything should happen as per my desire. But there are more dots on the page with each one having its periphery, these periphery intersect which causes conflict. How to avoid the conflicts? I see there are three possible ways to avoid it –

When I was searching for an image for this blog I found this image

    1. reduce the periphery such that only you remain in that periphery
    2. increase the periphery such that everything falls under it without intersection
    3. Make your periphery someone (only one) else with “full devotion”

In Indian philosophical context first two could be path of meditation and third is path of devotion (Bhakti). Do you know any other? Please share.

  • Life is… Simple

Life is simple, you breath in, you breath out. This is as simple as it can be. Right? Well, then comes a problem. You have your heart, your mind and your society. All of them start giving you some or the other perception, choices and opinions to affect you. The best part is you start listening to all of them. You listen to them and you are in a vicious circle of endless ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ and ‘yeses’ and ‘nos’. And thus, life becomes complex and at some time miserable. You forget in all this juggling – life is simple, you breath in and breath out. One day, you breath out and… everything stops (for you).

In all this complexity, have you ever observed – you have forgotten a very simple fact. You are alive until you breath and you relegate this important activity and start taking it for granted. I think this is how people start meditating, right? Well, meditation is for elderly and learned people, I am not that. So, why to think so big?

When I am thinking all this, I realized that I gave some thoughts to my mind and this mind has started creating opinions. I remembered reading something similar in a book of Richard Bach (I think in the book Illusions) – Existence “is”, that is enough. Why create story around that? So ‘life is…’ why even think if it is ‘simple’ LIFE IS… live it 🙂
